Locksmith in Port Colborne, OntarioAccess controlfor real buildings.

Fobs, keypads and card readers are only worthwhile when the doors, closers and wiring behind them are sound. We design small access systems for offices, clinics and multi-unit buildings, install them cleanly, and hand over a system your staff can actually manage.

From the shop

Locks, keys and doors, done properly.

Plenty of people call us slightly embarrassed, as if losing a key or snapping one in the cold were a personal failing. It is not; brass wears, pockets have holes, and locks age. We would much rather you tell us exactly what happened, including the bit where you tried a screwdriver, because the true story tells us which tools to bring and how to put it right.

— Humberstone Lock Services

  • You know what is happeningFrom the first look to the last turn of the key, we narrate the job in plain terms. You should never wonder what we are doing to your door.
  • Suggestions, not pressureIf we think an upgrade would help, we say so once and explain why. If you decline, that is the end of it.
  • The old parts handledRemoved locks and keys are given to you or taken away as you prefer. Old keys that no longer work are worth destroying, and we will do that if you like.

Locksmith services

Our locksmith services

We split our work into emergency, residential, automotive and commercial, but plenty of jobs sit between them. A landlord's rekey is residential work done with commercial thinking. A car key made in a driveway is automotive work with a home visit. Ask, and we will place it.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

The emergency pages describe openings for homes, shops and vehicles, extraction of snapped keys, freeing locks that have seized, and re-securing a door after forced entry. Every visit starts with an identity check, because entry work protects the people inside as much as the person outside.

Change or Rekey Locks

Keys multiply. One for the front, one for the side, another for the garage, a padlock on the shed.

  1. Two detached brass lock cylinders and four house keys on a wooden counter. — Lock Rekeying, Port Colborne
Lock RekeyingThe builder handed over your new home with a stack of identical keys, and you know the framing crew, the painters and the flooring installers all used a construction key during the build. The doors are brand new, but…
  2. Close view of a satin-nickel deadbolt thumbturn and edge faceplate on a painted timber door. — Deadbolt Installation, Port Colborne
Deadbolt InstallationThe bolt on the front door is keyed on both sides. Getting out at night means finding the key in the dark, and with a toddler in the house you have decided the inside should turn by hand.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Port Colborne
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe house is fifteen years old and every exterior door still wears the light hardware the builder fitted: a short bolt, a thin strike held by two small screws, and a knob lock that never suited a street entrance.
  4. Closed mortise lock case with spindle opening, keyhole, latch and deadbolt on a wooden workbench. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Port Colborne
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceAfter a wet summer the entry door sits lower in its frame. The lock works perfectly when the door is open, but with it shut you have to lift the handle and shoulder the door to get the deadbolt to throw.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Port Colborne
Smart Lock InstallationThere are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you…
  6. Detached rim gate lock and separate box keeper on an outdoor workbench. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Port Colborne
Gate & Building Entry LocksThe driveway gate drags a groove into the gravel every time it swings, and the latch stopped catching weeks ago. Now it sits propped shut with a brick, waiting for anyone to walk through and forget to prop it back.
  7. Two loose cam locks and a retaining clip resting below an open metal mailbox compartment. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Port Colborne
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe key still turns, but lately it spins a half-circle further than it used to before the little door lets go, and some mornings it takes a second try. The small cam lock inside is simply worn out.

Lock Rekeying

Every copy of your house key seems to work a little differently. One needs a jiggle, another sticks halfway, and the original wore down years ago. The lock itself is fine; the keys have drifted so far from each other that none fits cleanly.

Which fix fits?

Your front door has only the lock in the knob, nothing else. The usual fix

UsuallyAdd a proper deadbolt above it.

WhyA bolt into a reinforced strike is what actually holds a door; the knob just keeps it closed.

The deadbolt wobbles and the screws spin in the door. The usual fix

UsuallyRe-fit the hardware and repair the bore.

WhyStripped holes can be plugged and redrilled, so the same lock sits tight again.

You are tired of carrying keys and want a code instead. The usual fix

UsuallyA keypad deadbolt with a key override.

WhyEach family member gets a code, guests get a temporary one, and a mechanical key remains for the day the batteries die.

The spare under the planter by the side door is gone. The usual fix

UsuallyLost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

WhyA missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four.

Every copy of your house key seems to work a little differently. The usual fix

UsuallyLock Rekeying

WhyOne key for the whole house is a common request and usually achievable.

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. The usual fix

UsuallyLock Replacement & Upgrade

WhyA replacement lock has to fit holes that already exist, and that is where the visit begins.

How a visit goes

High security locks are cylinders and deadbolts designed to defeat the methods used against ordinary doors. Inside the cylinder a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, has to be satisfied at the same time as the normal pin stack, which is what stops…

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Walking the door with you

We look at the cylinder, the bolt, the strike, the hinges and any glass nearby, and say plainly which parts are sound and which are thin.

  2. 2 of 3

    Choosing the level together

A graded deadbolt with a patented cylinder for most homes, rated cylinders and heavier lock bodies for businesses. You pick the doors and the depth.

  3. 3 of 3

    Fitting, keying and registering

Cylinders go in, strikes are screwed into the framing, keys are cut from code, and the system is registered so only you can order more.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 80%Older homes

About 80% of homes in Port Colborne were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Old brass keys wear thin, and a key that has bent for years finally lets go in a cold cylinder. In older housing stock this is a regular call, so the locksmith is ready to extract the piece, check the cylinder and cut a new key from the code.

  • 71%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 71% of homes in Port Colborne (2021 Census).

Where homes are mostly detached, patio and sliding doors deserve attention alongside the hinged ones. Auxiliary locks, pin locks and better latches for sliders are routine additions that a locksmith brings on the same visit as the front door work.

Can a hardware store or kiosk copy my new key?

No. The blank for a patented keyway is distributed only through the manufacturer's network to locksmiths who hold the system, and the side milling or angled cuts need a machine set up for that line. A kiosk would have neither the blank nor the cut. Extra keys come through your locksmith, cut from code, once an authorised person has approved the order. That routine is a small inconvenience compared with never knowing who has a copy.

What is the difference between restricted and patented keys?

A restricted keyway is one the manufacturer supplies to a limited set of dealers, so blanks are harder to obtain but not legally protected. A patented key design is protected by a patent for a fixed term, and making or selling the blank without permission is unlawful during that time. Patented systems give the firmer control; restricted ones give a useful step up. The locksmith explains which your chosen line uses and when any patent expires.

Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?

Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most.

What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?

The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks.
